The Menlo-Atherton Service-Learning Center (SLC) provides equally accessible service opportunities, empowering students of all backgrounds to find purpose by serving the Menlo-Atherton Community.


Learning Objectives

M-A High School Service-Learning Objectives:
  • Civic Engagement: Recognize the importance of agency and life-long responsible citizenship in personal and professional activities in ways that benefit underserved populations.
  • Celebrate Diversity: Embody our motto of “strength in diversity” by looking beyond your own perspective and understand the way others see the world. Appreciate the knowledge, wisdom, assets and skills that individuals in these communities possess.

The Case for Community Engagement

  • are more likely to understand and critically understand course content (Tannebaum, 2008).
  • social skills are enhanced (Bailis and Melchior, 2002).
  • sense of identity is improved as are peer relations (Kelshaw, 2009).
  • feel more confident in their ability to identify issues, work with others, organize, take action and build a commitment to participation over the long term (Bailis and Melchior, 2002).
