Shadowing Sign Ups Available NowTop of Page

A visit can be very important in helping students determine which high school will be the best fit for them. When choosing a high school, we recommend visiting for a day. The M-A Shadow Program gives 8th grade students the opportunity to experience life at Menlo-Atherton High School. Eighth graders are paired with a 9th grade host so they can experience a typical day at M-A. Students are paired based on requests, gender, middle school, and academic, athletic and extracurricular interests.
Shadowing takes place on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays from October through February. Shadowing is very popular and appointments fill fast, so sign up early to reserve your spot. Available dates are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. The appointment window will be open Tuesday, September 6, 2016.

Shadowing Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)Top of Page

How do I schedule a Shadow visit?
To book an appointment, please use the Sign-up Genius link above. The appointment window will be open Tuesday, September 6, 2016. Appointments must be made at least one week prior to your planned visit.

Can a transfer student sign-up for shadowing?
Our shadowing program is for 8th graders who want to see a typical day in high school. We offer transfer students a visit day through our leadership program. Transfer visit days happen on Fridays. Visitors arrive at 10:40 and attend 3rd through 6th period with one of our leadership students. They have lunch on campus and take a private school tour with their host. To schedule a transfer student visit day, please email Mike Amoroso, our Student Activities Director and Leadership teacher.

What do I need to do to sign up?
You will provide your student’s name and parent contact information, his/her middle school, and his/her academic, athletic and extra-curricular interests. Once you sign up, you will receive a confirmation e-mail and a reminder e-mail the week before your appointment. Sign-ups should be completed by parents or guardians or school officials. Students should not sign-up and block spots for their friends. Each shadow’s contact information should be unique and provide contact information for their parent. If you need help signing up or need assistance in Spanish, please call our Parent Coordinator Lilly Quinonez at 322-5311 ext. 50255.

When will Shadowing occur?
Shadowing takes place on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays from October to February. Shadowing is done on regular days so visitors can see a typical day at M-A and attend all classes. See the Sign-up Genius link for specific dates. The link will be available after September 6th. Some dates may be blocked due to special school schedules and testing.

Who will be the shadow’s host?
Shadows will be paired with a current freshman, their host. The Shadow will go to the classes and any lunchtime club meetings or activities that the host has scheduled for the day. We match Shadows with a host of the same gender and look for a host that has graduated from the same middle school and/or has similar interests in academics, athletics and/or extra-curricular activities. Hosts will call before the visit to answer questions and to let the Shadow know about their schedule and lunch plans for the day.

Is it possible to shadow with a specific student?
Yes. We encourage you to request a friend as your host. Shadows may request specific students to serve as the host when they sign-up. Please keep in mind that all of our Shadow hosts must be current 9th graders. This gives the Shadows the most accurate representation of a typical day in high school. Also, not all freshmen have signed up to be hosts. Each host is responsible for only one guest at a time, so if they have already been paired with a visitor, we will definitely find another host with similar interests. We will always do our best to meet your request, but cannot make any promises.

What time do Shadows need to arrive and be picked up and where do they meet?
Shadows must sign in at the Administration Office in the front of the school at 8:30 a.m. They will receive a welcome packet, which includes a copy of the host’s schedule and a visitor pass for the day. Hosts will greet their Shadow in the front office around 8:35. First period starts at 8:45. Shadows will be brought back to the Administration Office to return their pass and sign out. Shadows should be picked up at 3:15 p.m. in front of the school.

What do Shadows wear?
We ask that all visitors comply with our dress code. Our dress code states that students must “dress in a manner that reflects positively on themselves, their parents and their school.” Students are expected to “dress in a manner conductive to the advancement of their education and dress in neither a manner that is disruptive nor a safety hazard to others.” If you need further clarification, please feel free to ask.

What should a Shadow bring with him/her? Do Shadows need a lunch?
The Shadow should bring a book to read or a quiet activity in the event that the host has a test or quiz, or to be used during our silent reading session during third period. Please do not bring electronic devices; they are not permitted in class. The host will also let the Shadow know what he/she typically does for lunch. Students either bring a lunch from home or bring money to purchase lunch at our on-campus facilities.

What should we do if the student is sick or an emergency arises the day of the scheduled Shadow date?
As soon as you know that there might be a reason that the Shadow will not be able to keep the assigned date, please call Lorry Orcutt at 322-5311 ext. 50113. We will let the host know that the date has been cancelled; rescheduling is based on availability.

What happens if all Shadow dates are full or we miss the Shadowing window?
Our Shadowing program is very popular and appointments fill up fast. We have increased the number of daily appointments and extended the window from the beginning of the school year through February to meet high demand. Our shadowing program ends based on the district guidelines for open enrollment and board policy. Please see the link for specific dates.
If you miss the window or it does not fit into your student’s schedule, we hope that you can participate in some of our other Get to Know M-A programs. We have school tours on the first Wednesday of the month, information nights, preview days, and open house. Please see the Get to Know M-A page for program details.

May I schedule a second visit?
Each year Menlo-Atherton hosts many potential students. In order to let every prospective Bear experience a day at Menlo-Atherton, we only allow one shadow visit. Please sign up for only one appointment. We will contact you if there are multiple sign-ups to confirm your first-choice date.

Do you keep a stand-by list in case there is a last minute cancellation?
We schedule all appointments through Sign-up Genius. We do not keep a separate list. If a shadow cancels their appointment through Sign-up Genius, it will open up a slot. It is best to check the link regularly to see if any previously booked slots open up. Please note, we match all shadows and hosts the week prior to their arrival. This allows us time to notify all teachers and the hosts. If you fill-in for a last minute cancellation, we cannot offer flexibility on host requests.

When is the deadline to apply for Open Enrollment?
Open enrollment is from October through February. Open enrollment and intra-district transfers are handled through the Sequoia Union High School District offices. Please refer to their website for all details and applications.  For more information, parents may call the Sequoia Union High School District office at (650) 369-1411.
